Lewis Grassic Gibbon

'Lewis Grassic Gibbon' was the pen-name of James Leslie Mitchell (1901-1935).
Influenced by his military experiences in the Middle East during the 1920s, he originally wrote a number of historical novels under his own name but for his most memorable work, the Scots Quair trilogy, he returned to his native Aberdeenshire for inspiration. Sunset Song, Cloud Howe and Grey Granite take social change and cultural clashes as their main themes, using a powerful, stylised prose that draws heavily of the dialect of the north-east. Grassic Gibbon is often cited as an inspiration by subsequent generations of Scottish writers.
