Jessie Kesson

Kesson (1916-94) was born in Inverness but moved to Elgin as a child. Her early years were marked by the hardship of poverty, orphanages and farm service which provided the settings for some of her latter writing.
Kesson was eventually able to become a full-time writer but only after many years of unskilled work in both London and Glasgow. Following the publication of her first book, The White Bird Passes, in 1958, Kesson produced a variety of novels, short stories and plays over the course of the next 30 years.
