Stevenson

Born in Edinburgh into a famous lighthouse engineering dynasty, Stevenson (1850 - 1894) rebelled against many of the social and religious constraints being imposed on him to pursue a career as a writer.
He ultimately penned many classic novels and short stories (of which he is rightly regarded as a master) including Treasure Island and Kidnapped. He was constantly dogged by tuberculosis and for this reason travelled widely in search of a more favourable climate for his health. He eventually settled in Samoa where he died in 1894, in the midst of creating yet another classic work Weir of Hermiston.
