Welsh (1958-)'s name will be forever associated with his first novel, Trainspotting, which became an instant sensation when it was published in 1993.
Drawing on his own formative experiences in his native Edinburgh and London, it presents an authentic and unrelenting episodic portrait of as unforgettable a collection of junkies, rude boys, and psychos as readers will ever encounter. Despite being written in a dense working-class Edinburgh dialect, Trainspotting shot to the top of bestseller lists around the world and the cult novel of the rave generation also became its cult movie starring Ewan Macgregor. Welsh's subsequent novels and short stories failed to attract the same critical success as his debut.
