Edinburgh's Science Festival is Europe's largest public celebration of science and technology. A two-week extravaganza of inspiring science events for people of all ages and interests, there are loads of different events including hands-on activities, workshops, shows, exhibitions, talks and tours guaranteed to inspire, stimulate and entertain kids and big kids alike!
The Festival aims to ensure that children of all ages can experience the delights of live theatre. It's a chance to see award-winning productions from all over the world in an exciting progamme of theatre, dance and puppetry for children and young people of all ages.
For four days each June families flock to the Royal Highland Show for one of Scotland's biggest annual events. There's all the Scottish family fun you could hope for, from gigantic tractors to miniature ponies, skilful shepherding dogs, chaotic terrier racing, creepie crawlies, fantastic falconry and gun dog displays, kids' cookery ... and the finest farmyard animals.
One for the boys (apologies to all tomboys out there who may love this kind of thing) - gravity powered racing on the longest and fastest course in Britain, featuring hair pin bends, sweeping curves and gun barrel straights, in the dramatic setting of the Cairngorms National Park. Who needs Formula One?
Glasgow Green, the city’s oldest park, hosts an action-packed programme of entertainment and activities for all the family including the Glasgow Show Parade, daredevil stunts and performances; as well as top acts, attractions and displays from stars of X-Factor to Bob the Builder and Barney the Dinosaur.
'The world's leading festival of youth arts', the Festival is a unique platform for young talent and a celebration of youthful creativity and innovation, a multi-arts event attracting some of the finest young dance companies, classical dance academies, youth orchestras, bands and music ensembles from around the world.
Not only does the Fringe offer a dedicated Children's section with shows varying from stand-up to story-telling, there are so many shows and events for older ones too. There is so much going on for free. Many of the top acts put in a free performance on Fringe Sunday, and the Royal Mile buzzes with street theatre.
To witness events such as cabre-tossing and proper tug-of-war, you can pick pretty much Highland Games event really - check our full calendar here - but the Braemar Gathering is one of the most famous of all the Games staged in Scotland, not least because it has HM The Queen as patron and always has a royal guest present on the day.
Crowds gather from near and far to celebrate Viking heritage in Largs, notably the Battle of Largs 1263 (the last Viking invasion in the UK). There are events for all the family throughout the week starting with the opening day parade, opening ceremony and various Viking activities.
