Edinburgh stations

Looking over Waverley Station, Edinburgh at night
Edinburgh has excellent links by rail from the rest of Britain and onwards across Scotland.

Edinburgh Waverley
Waverley Station was first opened in 1846 and was rebuilt between 1892-1902. It lies between the old town and modern Edinburgh, adjacent to Princes Street, Edinburgh Castle and the Princes Street Gardens. ScotRail, National Express and Virgin trains all serve Waverley.

Although refurbished several times during its history, a flavour of the original structure can still be seen in the station's elaborate, domed ceiling where wreathed cherubs leap amid a wealth of scrolled ironwork.

The main central exits take you out onto Waverley Bridge, where the Castle appears dramatically ahead of you and the Old Town skyline is to the south, with Princes Street to the north. The northern exit from Waverley leads up a stairway to Princes Street itself, while the southern exit leads to Market Street, the outer fringe of the Old Town.

Edinburgh has excellent links by rail from the rest of Britain. High-speed inter-city train services along Britain's east coast main line link Edinburgh to major centres throughout eastern England as far as London while the West Coast main line connects the city with areas such as the Lake District, Chester and Bath. The city also has good rail links with the rest of Scotland.

Edinburgh Haymarket
Along with Waverley, Haymarket is the capital's other mainline station. It is situated just under two miles west on the lines from Waverley to Glasgow, Fife and the Highlands. The station predates Waverley and was Edinburgh's original terminus for trains from Glasgow. It was modernised in the 1980s and is used mainly by commuters to Edinburgh's west end, local residents and visitors to major venues in the west of the city such as Murrayfield rugby stadium.

The west coast main line connects the city with areas such as the Lake District, Chester and Bath. Haymarket also has good rail links with the rest of Scotland.
