Cabins

Perfect for couples, small families and nature lovers, cabins offer everything from rustic charm to modern comfort. Often set in woodlands or beside tranquil lochs, they are compact and cosy and usually include fireplaces, kitchenettes, loft bedrooms and private hot tubs.

Lodges

Designed for larger groups, lodges offer spacious dining and living areas, communal lounges and occasionally bar facilities. Lodges are a cost-effective alternative to booking multiple hotel rooms and are often found near Scotland’s top attractions.

Chalets

Known for their classic, French Alpine design, chalets are ideal for groups of friends or families wanting extra space. Often found in Scottish ski resorts, national parks and holiday parks, they typically feature ensuite bedrooms, generous living areas and outdoor spaces with hot tubs. They offer a more luxurious stay and often require week-long bookings.

FAQs: Everything you need to know

Before you decide, we’re here to answer all your burning questions on what you can expect in a Scottish cabin, chalet or lodge stay.

Are cabins, lodges and chalets accessible?

Yes. You’ll find many properties fully adapted for wheelchair and disabled level access.

Inside you’ll find accessibility features including:

  • Ground-floor layouts
  • Bathrooms with wet rooms, grab rails, shower seats and hoists
  • Wide doorways
  • Kitchen areas with adjustable worktops

When is the best time to visit?

If you’re looking for a good balance of mild weather and fewer crowds, then we recommend visiting Scotland during the shoulder seasons of late April to May and September to October.

April to May brings drier weather, fewer midges and crowds before the peak summer season. September to October is slightly cooler but you’ll be able to witness beautiful autumn foliage especially if your accommodation is near a forest or woodland location.

Do I need a car to stay in a cabin, lodge or chalet?

This will entirely depend on the location of your accommodation. As most of these self-catering options are situated in forest and woodland locations, a car would be more beneficial than public transport. Taking the car is also handy if you’re planning to transport groceries or want the flexibility of getting from A to B from lots of different attractions and restaurants without relying on bus or train timetables.

Are these stays suitable for couples?

Absolutely. These stays are perfect for romantic breaks, anniversaries and honeymoons, with extras like chocolates and champagne on arrival and hot tubs.
