Before you choose your camping holiday in Scotland, first find out what kind of camper you are:

  • You are a camper - if you love waking up in a tent, don't mind a little condensation, and would never admit to owning an airbed around the campfire.
  • You are a glamper - if you love to book the quirkiest accommodation Scotland has to offer and prefer to shut the door at night to keep out the midges.
  • You are a caravanner - if you like to take the comforts of home with you, including a double bed and all the mod-cons.
  • You are a campervan fan - if you like to travel around seeing lots of Scotland and don't mind compromising on living space.

Whichever you prefer, here's how to plan your perfect camping or caravan holiday in Scotland.

With facilities such as hot showers, kitchens, drying rooms, and waste disposal areas - Scotland has lots of campsites for those travelling around - whether you're in a campervan or bringing a tent. Camping locations

Looking for somewhere to pitch up? Fort William and the Glen Nevis area is a great spot if you want to climb the biggest hills in Scotland. There are lots of campsites in Fort William where you have access to Ben Nevis, the UK's highest mountain, as well as the Caledonian Canal and the Glenfinnan Viaduct.

Camping in Glencoe makes for an awe-inspiring outdoor adventure. Explore Glencoe by day, and at night, light your campfire to watch the stars. Why not head to one of the glen's famous local inns to hear old tales of clan battles and cows rustling in the surrounding mountains.

Scotland's largest loch offers up 720 square miles of National Park to explore. Pitch your tent or campervan at one of the campsites at Loch Lomond to bag one of the 21 Munros, paddleboard around the loch's 22 islands, or hike along the West Highland Way. Wild camping at Loch Lomond is restricted from March to September, but you can still 'wild' camp in designated spaces with a permit from the National Park.

Glamping

Or why not try glamping? It's a great way of getting outdoors but not having to worry about a soggy tent or Scottish weather damping your holiday.

From teepees, wigwams and yurts, to quirky getaways, treehouses and eco pods, you've got plenty of options for family trips or solo adventures. Add in a spot of luxury to your stay with a private hot tub or jacuzzi or find budget-friendly options that are suitable for everyone.

Camping and caravan sites come in all shapes and sizes to suit all budgets and tastes, and are found in just about every corner of Scotland, with many of them being open all year round.

Discover some amazing spots overlooking lochs, mountains and or in the middle of a forest. There are also many holiday parks next to beaches, ideal for unforgettable wildlife watching experiences.

What to expect

Pitches come in various sizes and layouts, offering different levels of accessibility and proximity to services. Many sites boast beautifully landscaped grounds and excellent facilities including café's and shops, outdoor and indoor swimming pools, children’s play areas, internet access and Wi-Fi. There may also be public areas where guests can access a reception and tourist information services, laundry facilities, public toilets and shower rooms.

If you are planning a camping or campervan trip around Scotland, it is always advised that you use official campsites or designated overnight parking areas. This will help preserve Scotland's natural landscape and benefit our small local communities and residents.

There are hundreds of campsites in scenic coastal or beach spots across the country, complete with facilities and docks for your campervan too.

Please remember to:

  • Plan and book ahead. It's always useful to have a plan B ready.
  • Be considerate. If you arrive somewhere and it's fully booked, contact nearby campsites to see if they have availability. Please don't stay overnight in an undesignated area.
  • Always take your rubbish home with you and pick up after your dog.
  • Keep a safe distance from any land management operations.
  • Be very careful not to disturb or destroy a plant, bird, animal or geological feature.
  • Don't damage or disturb cultural heritage sites.
  • It's important to remember that access rights don't include motor vehicles. If public or private land owners restrict or regulate parking on their land, you should stick to their rules.
