An Taigh Clach

'An Taigh Clach' provides excellent self catering accommodation in the crofting township of Carloway on the Atlantic west coast of the Isle of Lewis.

The property boasts stunning views, with the Atlantic to the west, the hills of Uig and Harris in the distance and the croft land of Carloway directly outside your door. It is ideally situated for exploring the whole island and especially the many local sites of interest such as the world famous Callanish Standing Stones, the Broch at Doune Carloway, the Garenin Blackhouse village and the restored Norse Mill between Dalbeg and Shawbost. Built as a traditional family croft house in the early 1900's, this recently renovated and traditionally constructed solid stone building has survived the best, and worst, that nature and the elements has thrown at it. The living area has been thoughtfully laid out to give the maximum viewing exposure. There are two bedrooms within the property, one double and one twin room and a sofa bed in the living area. Whilst the bedrooms are not large, they are cosy with their solid oak floors and snuggled within the old stone walls your sleep should be peaceful and undisturbed. In an effort to reduce energy consumption we have opted not to install a bath, however there is a larger than average shower in the shower room. The recently constructed extension is a quality family living area including an open plan fully fitted kitchen. The primary heat source within the living space is a multi fuel stove with an ample supply of wood and peat available for the duration of your stay. The adjacent utility shed's primary use is for storing your surfing or wet weather gear, bicycle storage and pets are welcome in the utility shed but by prior approval only in An Taigh Clach. There is a fresh water supply to the shed and a barbecue tucked away for the more balmy evenings - we do get a few. Property sleeps 1-4 (plus a sofa bed).

The cottage is well catered for by a public bus service, being on the west coast circular route, makes getting anywhere on the island relatively easy. Carloway is also served by the single track Pentland Road which cuts directly across the island to Stornoway and is an ideal way to view the heatherclad Lewis moor and peatlands in their as yet natural unspoilt state.

Getting here has never been easier and your break could take you from 'pavement to peatbank' in a matter of hours.
