    Shieldaig is a 5 star village, only one and a half hours drive from Inverness, (single track road the last ½ hour). A hidden gem in the Highlands, with a spectacular location nestled amongst the Torridon Mountains, sitting right on the West Coast. A perfect base for exploring Wester Ross; with a shop and pub in walking distance.

    Close to Inverewe and Attadale Gardens, Lochcarron weavers, Carron Pottery, Eilean Donan Castle, Strome castle ruins. The Isle of Skye is not so far away with Tallisker whisky distillery. You can visit the ancient Brochs at Glen Elg, use the little ferry and still "go over the sea to Skye". A trip over the Bealach na Ba to explore Applecross? The Munro's of Beinn Eighe, Liathach and Alligin; Lochs Torridon and Maree are on the doorstep.     • Breakfast Available Breakfast cooked to order / pre-order and provided 8-9am. Can provide 7.45am cooked breakfast on request. Any earlier - continental style breakfast can be left out the night before.
    • Bring Your Own Bottle Guests are very welcome to bring their own alcohol, glasses & recycling facilities provided.
    • Dairy Free Generally have soya and rice milk in the house. If this is important please give advanced notice.
    • Eating Out Facilities within 2 miles Recommend The Torridon Inn, 10 minutes up the road. Advanced booking advised.
    • Gluten Free 1 cereal is gluten free (organic rice crispies). Please bring your own bread with you, as there are no gluten free supplies in the village.
    • Nut Free Meals Only the muesli has nuts.
    • Organic Food In this remote are there's not a plethora of organic producers! I can reliably source organic - milk, eggs, yoghurt, wheatabix, puffed rice, cornflakes, sunflower & pumpkin seeds, teas / coffee .
    • Tea & Coffee Available Fairtrade tea & coffee in rooms. Herbal teas on top of guests fridge (landing area). Fresh milk in guests fridge.
    • Vegetarian Food Available Our breakfast menu has a number of vegetarian selections to provide a substantial meal.

    • No Smoking Permitted We ask guests who wish to smoke to go to the roadside to do so. Anyone found smoking in the house will be asked to leave.

    • On Public Transport Route Public transport is very limited here. The trains are met at lunchtime with a minibus connection to Shieldaig, but not in the evening. We don't really have a taxi service.

    • Remote Location We have single track roads for 30minutes whether coming in from the south or north. Every journey here takes longer than you think due to single track roads and our remote location. Applecross is 8 miles as the crow flies but takes about 1 hour to get to!

    Road Directions

    From Strathcarron & South - drive north to SHIELDAIG (do not go to Torridon). Only 1 road thro Shieldaig village. Either go left at 1st turn, thro village, up hill & 1st house on right. Or 2nd left & 4th building on left. House at top of village opposite war memorial.

    From Gairloch drive south to Kinlochewe, turn right A896 to SHIELDAIG. Drive through Glen Torridon, stay on main road (A896) - IGNORE the Torridon turn continue to SHIELDAIG. Just after Shieldaig village HERON & 40mph sign, take 1st right, we are the 4th on left.

    From Inverness - follow the Brown Tourist signs for "Wester Ross Coastal Trail". Initially Ullapool then at Garve, Gairloch direction. This gets you to Kinlochewe, then follow directions "From Gairloch" above.

    Public Transport Directions

    Public transport in this remote area is limited - less at weekends. The nearest train stations are over 20 miles away, with few links into the village. Taxis are very rare.

    Getting there by railway:

    Kyle - Inverness, Inverness - Kyle train service. Alight at Strathcarron. Morning trains are met by a local mini bus service (not the afternoon trains) ask to be dropped at Aurora - top of village. Please let us know when you book that you require early entry.

    Getting there by aeroplane:

    Inverness airport - 2 hours,

    Glasgow airport - 5 hours

    Edinburgh airport - 5 hours
