    Surrounded by wild and spectacular landscape Durness SYHA hostel has a warm and friendly atmosphere. With its cliff-top location, magnificent wildlife and Smoo Cave within easy reach, it’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.

    There are both multi-shared and private rooms, a well-equipped self-catering kitchen, drying room and cosy lounge which is heated by a coal-burning stove.

    This hostel is great for relaxation, walks along the beautiful beaches and sand dunes or up Ben Hope - Scotland’s most Northerly Munro. Hill walkers will also love Foinaven, Ben Loyal and Cranstackie and for those wishing simply to relax Balnakiel Beach and Faraid Head are beautiful sandy beaches and large sand dunes to be explored.

    Public Transport Directions

    From the nearest information centre: From Durness Tourist Information Centre follow the sign post for Tongue, go along the coastal road about 0.5 miles, along the inland route, about a mile.

    Getting there by railway: Monday to Saturday, Scotrail services depart Inverness for Wick/Thurso at 7.14am and 10.39am, connecting at Lairg with the Royal Mail post buses for onward travel to Durness. From late April to late September, Monday to Saturday, Tim Dearman’s coach service leaves Inverness at 8.50am arriving in Durness at 2.00pm. During July and August the service also runs on Sundays. All buses will drop you off at the Durness Youth Hostel on request.

    Getting there by aeroplane: From Inverness take the A96 to the town centre, then A9 to Tain and A836 and A838 to Durness. From Wick take A882 to Thurso then A836 to Tongue then A838 to Durness.

    Getting there by ferry: From Ullapool take A835 then A894 then A838 to Durness. In the summer it may be possible to connect with various bus routes to complete the whole journey. From Scrabster take A836 to Tongue then A838 to Durness.
