    East Heddle is our flagship property. It is three bedroomed family sized croft, 5 star rated and Gold standard GTBS, It forms the heart of our business.

    East Heddle is without local comparison. It is simply stunning and we certainly hope that your expectations will be exceeded. It was rated as 5 star by the STB in the summer of 2009 and stretches the category beyond excellence. Our guest book says "Marvellous" on nearly every page. Come and see for yourself the joy, pleasure and deep relaxation of East Heddle.
     
    East Heddle has one master (shower) en suite queen size double bedroom, one additional queen size double bedroom and one twin bedroom. It has a large family sized bathroom in addition to the en suite. It has a large furnished kitchen and open plan sitting room.
     
    East Heddle has an original, authentic and antique interior of great charm and beauty. Much of the period furniture is restored and original to the property. However,  It is not an homage to the past and top range modern appliances compliment these antiques with all the convenience and comfort of the 21st Century.

    Environmentally the Croft was rebuilt with stone from the site and the turf roof was cut from less than 100yrds away. The heating system is controlled by a renewable energy ground source heat pump installation. Few properties anywhere could have a lower carbon footprint in construction or maintenance.

    Duvets and pillows are egyptian goose down, with 400 percale cotton sheets. Panasonic Viera 32 inch Freesat TV with integrated home cinema system. Wireless broadband of course.  The house is situated in the heart of our secluded 9.5 acres of beautiful private gardens and extended wildlife reserve. It simply gets better as the years go by.

    Road Directions

     Follow the A9 to Scrabster (Northlink Ferries) or Gills Bay (Pentand Ferries). When the road stops, get on the Ferry. For details on arrival in Orkney see below.

    How to Find Heddle

     

    Ordnance Survey Map Ref: hy 355 126 (sheet 6)

    From Stromness (8.4 miles journey time estimate less than 15 mins)

    Set your car trip meter to 0.0 Miles . Turn right as you leave the ferry. After 400yrds you will reach a mini-roundabout. Take the third exit. Follow the road up and over the hill (1.8 miles) then turn right at the T-junction onto the A965. (Look for seals on your left as you cross a small bridge).

    Stay on this road, through Stenness village, (3.2miles) Keep going past  Maeshowe on your left and Tormiston Mill on your right (4.5miles). Keep going on the A965  until you reach Finstown (6.9miles).

    Enter Finstown and pass Baikies stores on your right, The Pomona Pub on your right and Pottingers Petrol Station on your left.

    Go a further 50 Yards past the junction with the A966 signposted Evie (Do not take the A966) and turn right into Heddle Road (7.5miles). Drive up the Hill of Heddle and past the Quarry at the top on your right. Drive over the Hill and down the other side for half a mile. You have arrived. (8.4miles)


    From  Kirkwall Airport (journey time estimate maximum 20 mins)

    Turn right as you exit the airport and follow the A960 to Kirkwall. Do not turn off the road and you will arrive in the centre of Kirkwall with the Cathedral on your right.

    Turn left (compulsory) at the Clydesdale Bank and turn right at the next cross-roads. (Ford dealer on your right). Continue past the Post Office and after 200m you come to T-junction with a small round-about. Take the first exit road to the left.

    Keep on this road, past the Peedie Sea on your left and after a few hundred yards cross straight over another small roundabout, (second exit) past the garage on your left and continue signposted to Finstown.

    This is about seven miles straight along the A965. Enter Finstown and after a few hundred yards look out for the Cemetery on your left followed by a Builders Yard called Allans of Gillock also on your left.

    Turn left immediately past this yard into Heddle Road. Drive up the Hill of Heddle and past the Quarry at the top on your right. Drive over the Hill and down the other side for half a mile. You have arrived.

    From Kirkwall Hatston Pier (journey time estimate less than 10 mins)

    Turn right on leaving the Ferry complex.  After 250 Yrds arrive at a T  junction with the A965. Turn right and follow the A965 to Finstown.

    Enter Finstown and after a few hundred yards look out for the Cementry on your left followed by a Builders Yard called Allans of Gillock also on your left. Turn left immediately past this yard into Heddle Road. Drive up the Hill of Heddle and past the Quarry at the top on your right. Drive over the Hill and down the other side for half a mile. You have arrived.

    From the South Isles Ferries (journey time estimate 35-45 mins)

    Follow the A961 signs to Kirkwall and enter. Locate St.Magnus Cathedral. Make sure it is on the right side of your vehicle and follow the directions as from the Airport above.

     

    Public Transport Directions

    Car Hire

    Unless camping and backpacking, then to fully enjoy Orkney you must have access to a car while here, public transport is patchy at best and using taxis would soon become very expensive.

    Driving in Orkney is a pleasure but the the mileage rises rapidly without notice. Even super-fit cyclists would benefit from car access to get about.

    Local Car Hire is easy and convenient but you are advised to book as early as you can to guarantee the type of vehicle you want and availability.
