Four Market Square - Melrose

Overview

Four Market Square offers great accommodation sleeping six adults in three bedrooms and two bathrooms over two floors with a spacious lounge and dining kitchen with outdoor balcony. Within a few minutes' walk are several excellent eating places, walking and fishing on the river Tweed and friendly shops selling a range of local produce. Martin and Karen Baird offer you a personal welcome to their newly redecorated apartment which sits above their locally renowned Butchers Shop. Martin is originally a farmer from Kelso where his family have farmed for generations and now offers local beef, lamb and pork of the highest quality to his discerning customers. His delicious homemade pies now travel the length of Britain with visitors who have become hooked during their stay in the town.

Entering this light filled apartment there is a fully equipped kitchen with large dining table, gas hob, electric oven, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, fridge and freezer. Patio doors open onto a balcony with outdoor table and chairs perfect to catch the evening sun looking onto the lovely old buildings of the original railway station and the Eildon hills beyond.

This first floor continues with a large twin bedroom, double bedroom, bathroom with separate bath and shower, a spacious sitting room which looks onto the square and has a working fireplace for cosy winter nights, digital TV, DVD, CD and a large sofa which can make into a bed for an additional two guests.

Upstairs there's a twin room with an ensuite shower room which has great views over the traditional houses of Melrose to the hills of Gattonside beyond where the monks used to grow vines on the sunny hillside in centuries gone by.

Off road parking for two cars comes as part of your stay along with a welcome breakfast pack of Martins sausages, bacon and local free range eggs.

Eating - the central location of this apartment means that you are literally next door to two award winning hotels with excellent bar and restaurant menus and a few minutes' walk from a brassiere, Italian restaurant, coffee shops and butcher, baker, fishmonger and greengrocer selling fantastically fresh local Scottish products.

Walking - there are gentle walks past the 12th century Melrose Abbey and along the banks of the Tweed or for the more enthusiastic walker a climb up the Eildon hills, around the ancient Roman settlement of Trimontium or take in a section of the Southern Upland Way or St.Cuthberts Way which all have stunning views of the surrounding countryside.

Historic Interest - 12th century Melrose Abbey may lead you to explore the Abbeys in Kelso, Jedburgh and the particularly picturesque Dryburgh where you can also take in Scots View on your way.
Sir Walter Scotts home at Abbotsford is only a few miles from Melrose and you will find other stunning homes in Floors Castle, Mellerstain, Manderston and Hopetoun.

Fishing - salmon and trout fishing on the famous Tweed is only a short walk away.

Golfing - there are many local golf courses catering for all standards of golfer from the 9-hole course on the lower slopes of the Eildons in Melrose to the highly maintained 18-hole courses at the Roxburghe near Kelso and the Woll near Selkirk.

Cycling - there are marked cycle ways around the Melrose area and for mountain biking the dedicated forest centre of Glentress near Peebles.

Festivals - the home of Rugby 7s for 125 years the annual Melrose 7s tournament takes place the second weekend in April when this small town is simply buzzing with fun for a whole weekend.
Borders Book Festival takes place annually in mid-June which attracts a host of well known authors.
Common Riding can be experienced in June when hundreds of locals ride-out on horses to mark the ancient boundaries of the town.
Pipe Band Festival fills the town
