    The Property

    Dating from the late 18th and early 19th centuries, this house offers accommodation which is spacious and comfortable with ample entertaining space for families and large groups. With three reception rooms in addition to the large farmhouse kitchen, there is plenty of space for guests to find a peaceful spot to enjoy a good book or just admire the view.

    For many it will be the breathtakingly beautiful surroundings which prove to be the real star, providing the perfect spot to ‘get away from it all' whatever the season. The Gorrenberry Estate extends to over 2,500 acres of magnificent rolling hills punctuated by the Hermitage Water valley. Of this, 170 acres of pasture is a livestock farm, while the hills and the river valleys are managed as an ecological restoration project (please click here for further information). 

    Guests are welcome to bring their own horses and there are miles of fabulous rides on the estate. Three looseboxes are available next to the house in addition to grazing.


    Activities & Attractions

    Guests are welcome to explore the entire estate and there is fabulous walking, cycling and riding from the doorstep. There are splendid hill walks from the house and less challenging walks along the burns including a path beside the Hermitage Water through ancient woodland which is carpeted with primroses in May. The quiet country lanes are ideal for mountain biking and riding and the 7Stanes Mountain Biking Centre is just seven miles away. 

    For keen fishing guests, salmon, trout and sea trout run the Hermitage Water which flows just below the house. There is also ‘fun fishing' for children on the Gorrenberry Burn on the estate. Guests looking for more established fishing can head to the picturesque Border Esk and the Liddel nearby.   Golfers can enjoy courses at nearby Langholm and Newcastleton, and the renowned Solway Coast courses are within an easy day trip.  

    Despite the peaceful, remote location, good road connections make a remarkably wide area accessible for day trips. The pretty town of Langholm is 13 miles from the house providing excellent local amenities, while supermarkets and more extensive shopping can be found in Hawick, home of the famous cashmere mills.  For those interested in tracing their family's Border links a visit to the Heritage Hub in the Heart of Hawick is a must. 

    Other favourite daytrips slightly further afield include the charming Border's towns of Jedburgh and Melrose, the stunning Solway Coast with its beautiful beaches and postcard villages, or the west coast towns of Carlisle and Gretna. Hop east to the magnificent Kielder Forest, the pretty market towns of Hexham and Corbridge, and the spectacular Northumberland National Park.

    Range of useful utility / boot rooms ideal for outdoor kit and dogs including back entrance hall, store room, large boot / drying room with excellent drying facilities including electric welly dryers (NB these are coin-operated).

    Traditional farmhouse kitchen with range cooker with 5 ring electric hob, two ovens, heating drawer and grill. Large fridge / freezer and additional fridge, dishwasher, microwave. Dining table and chairs for 10 guests.

    Drawing room with log burner, TV with Freeview and DVD. Books, games and DVDs are provided.

    Snug / TV room with log burner, TV with Freeview and DVD.

    Conservatory with seating.

    Study with log burner, stereo and desk.

    Cloakroom with WC and basin.

    Bathroom with bath with handheld shower, basin and WC.

    First floor

    Bedroom one with 6' double bed.

    Bedroom two with 3' twin beds.

    Bedroom five (accessed through the games room or via the back staircase) with 3' twin beds.

    All guests are provided with spun-down pillow and duvets, Egyptian cotton bed linen and towels and guest toiletries. One hairdryer is provided.

    Shower room with walk in shower, basin and WC.

    Games room with pool table.

    Wi fi, mobile reception and landline telephone

    Wireless broadband is available. There is no mobile reception within several miles of the house. A landline coin-operated telephone is provided.

    The house is centrally-heated throughout in addition to the three log burning stoves.

    Garden and grounds

    The house sits within a large, fully-enclosed garden. Another garden area to the side of the house has an outside seating area and fabulous views of the hills. There is ample parking.

    A range of outbuildings can be made available to guests for the secure storage of bicycles, tack and other outdoor kit. There is a table tennis table and kit in one of the larger barns.

    Guests should note that Gorrenberry is a working farm and whilst guests should not be disrupted, cattle do wander in and out of the barn close to the house.

    Bring your own horses! (BHS approved)

    Guests are welcome to bring their own horses and there are miles of fabulous rides on the estate. Three looseboxes are available next to the house in addition to grazing. A nominal fee of £15 per day, per horse is applicable to include stabling and grazing. Hay can be supplied at additional cost. Guests are responsible for cleaning up after their horses.

    Catering and housekeeping

    Gorrenberry House can be let on a self-catering basis or treat yourself to a proper rest and book a cook (either full time or for the occasional, special meal), or arrange for homemade meals to be delivered. Asda and Tesco will deliver to the house. 

    Facilities for babies

    A cot is available on request.


    Well behaved dogs are welcome at Gorrenberry House but must be kept to the kitchen and large boot room. There are also kennels for working dogs in the steadings with a coin-operated fan heater.
