Holmlea

Self Catering

Orphir, Orkney, Orkney, KW17 2RD

With glorious and uninterrupted views over Scapa Flow and within easy reach of all of Orkney’s natural, man-made and cultural wonders, Holmlea is an ideal place for a peaceful and enjoyable holiday.

Holmlea is situated in Houton, on mainland Orkney, mid-way between Kirkwall and Stromness. The Hoy Ferry runs from Houton Pier making Holmlea of special interest to divers and those interested in the World War Two remains on Hoy – although as a walkers’ destination Hoy is also an attractive prospect.

You may be coming to Orkney to enjoy the nature - migrant birds, Primula scotica  - or  to visit the vibrant Folk Festival in May, the marvellous St Magnus Festival or the unique-to-Scotland Wine Festival in June, the Dounby or Kirkwall agricultural shows in August – or you may be keen to see for yourself the world-class Neolithic history so visible throughout  Orkney. For all of these, Holmlea offers a welcoming, comfortable and spacious base from which to venture out.

The accommodation, suitable for two people, is a purpose-built guest wing of the owner’s house. It comprises a very large, bright sitting room with a neat kitchen area to the rear as well as a fully tiled shower room with under-floor heating.

Upstairs is a spacious bedroom with a double bed and a huge duvet in case the Orkney weather turns wild (hot water bottles are also included!). A window to the south allows the sun to stream in and the ones to the west mean that, at the right time of year, you can enjoy the sunset from your bed...

On arrival at Holmlea you will find a welcome pack comprising a bottle of fizz, bread, butter, tea, coffee, milk, sugar and jam - that is your first breakfast sorted. A table and chairs are provided for outside and on fine evenings you can sit with a drink in hand and listen to the eider ducks in Houton Bay or watch the geese, curlews, oyster catchers and hares in the surrounding fields.

A television, CD player/radio with docking station and DVD player are available as is access to broadband.

Also supplied are a hairdryer, iron and ironing board. A hoover is not provided as cleaning should not be part of your holiday. And neither should washing clothes so I have not installed a washing machine!

Holmlea is in a relatively rural situation meaning that public transport is very limited. You will be best to have a car if choosing to stay here.

    Tarriff:

The holiday week runs from Saturday to Saturday. Arrival is from 3pm and departure is by 10.30am. Shorter stays may be possible, particularly during quieter, out of season periods. I charge £360 per week or £55 a night for shorter stays.

A deposit of £100 is required on booking with the full amount payable one month before arrival. The entire deposit is refundable if the booking is cancelled a month or more before your arrival date. £50 will be refunded if you cancel two weeks before your arrival date.

I am also happy to offer bed and continental breakfast for two or more nights at £70 per night.

This is a no smoking house and I am afraid I do not allow dogs to holiday in Holmlea.
