Killean Estate

Self Catering

Tayinloan, Kintyre, Argyll, PA29 6XF

Killean Estate, Kintyre offers 18 gorgeous luxury cottages, villas and a Baronial mansion, set in a truly breath-taking coastal location. Sleep 2, 4, 5, 6, 9 or 20. Magnificent sea views. Two cottages are dog-friendly.

Killean Estate offers the very best of luxury Scottish accommodation on the west coast of the Kintyre peninsula. The estate, spanning nearly five thousand acres of sprawling hills, lochs, woodland and farmland offers many opportunities for shooting, fishing, golf and hiking.

We have over a mile of sandy beaches (complete with resident seals), a working farm and tropical gardens, but the best feature of all is sure to be the most amazing views of the coastline towards the islands of Gigha, Islay and Jura. Indeed on a clear day, you can actually see the coast of Ireland! The estate also benefits from the Gulf Stream which offers a warmer climate than the Scottish average and the coastal breeze keeps the midges at bay!

Killean offers many properties of different sizes to suit every need, all with the same high specification. Eight of the properties are listed buildings and enjoy period features throughout including real fires, yet have been recently refurbished including new bathrooms and kitchens. Ten cottages are newly-built have all the luxuries you would expect of a new property (including eco-friendly under-floor heating). Full details (photos, maps, prices) are available on our website where you can also book online.

We stayed at the doll's house, which was great. Plenty of room and very cosy. It was actually better than we expected. We only really appreciated the Killean estate a couple of days before we left. We did a bit of driving about. So, the four days we stayed was really not enough. We wish we had stayed longer!! The staff were amazing and it's lovely when they are able to have a chat. They made our stay even more enjoyable. Our dog had the most amazing time. This time last year he was really really ill. So, to see him so full of life around Killean was a good tonic for us. He seemed to think the towels you provided were for him to sleep on and he chose them over his own bedding which we found quite funny.  Thank you once again for making our stay such a memorable one. Hazel Finlayson.  October 2012

I cannot praise the estate or the our apartment highly enough. The setting is idilic and a great place to just sit back, relax and enjoy the outdoors (or get involved if that's your thing). The house was gorgeous and so many added benefits which made it feel like something really special just for us. We were really pleased when the temperature dropped a bit on Sunday and we could light the fire! I have been waxing lyrical about everything since I came back to work and I know that a few people have taken the website details/estate name so I hope they seriously consider coming along and having a great time as we did. I think I can safely say that we will be back and I know that my in-laws are already regulars who I am sure will also make a return visit as soon as they can.

Loved our stay at Killean Estate. Very relaxing and accommodation snug, comfortable and cosy - just what we were looking for.

Very many thanks...everything was great..accommodation ws ideal, location great, sunsets fantastic...I hope we can manage back sometime soon..thank you Mrs Gibson, May 2010.

I've been meaning to email you since we returned from our marvellous holiday in Scotland. We were most impressed with the wonderful accommodation on the Killean was such a relief to find that we had chosen well, having has a couple of mishaps in teh past with booking from websites! The apartment was beautifully furnished, clean and well stocked in terms of kitchen equipment. We loved exploring the coast line and the hills and then sitting quietly in the evenings watching teh pheasants and the rabbits wilst drinking a glass or two of wine...delightful. We would very much like to return, possibly as early as September if our schedule allows. Thank you very much for all the attention to was much appreciated.

    Road Directions

(Glasgow to Killean by road is 116 miles, and will take approx 2 ½ hrs)  Travelling by car from the South you will take the M6 northbound to the Scottish Border, followed by the M74 into Glasgow. Follow the signs for the M8 westbound (towards the airport) that will take you through Glasgow Centre. From the M8 fork left onto the M898 which takes you over the Erskine Bridge. At the end of the Erskine Bridge turn a sharp left onto the A82 (towards Crainlarich and Loch Lomond). Stay on this until you reach Tarbet where you will then fork left onto the A83 (towards Campbeltown). This road will take you all the way to Killean, travelling over the ‘Rest And Be Thankful’ mountains, around the top of the Loch heads of Loch Long, Loch Fyne and finally Loch Gilp and passing through the towns of Inveraray, Lochgilphead and Tarbert and finally the small ferry port of Tayinloan.  1.2 miles after you have passed through Tayinloan, you will see the Dolls Cottages on the left hand side of the road, which are the first of the Killean Estate Properties.

An excellent way to travel to Killean, is to drive there, whereupon you will experience driving through the fantastic highland landscape, and then return by ferry, thereby sampling the delights that the coastline has to offer.   This will work out a slightly more expensive option, but is well worth it!

    Public Transport Directions

Getting there by railway:- The nearest station to Killean is at Oban and there are frequent trains from Glasgow to Oban. From Oban to Killean it is then a further 69 miles and there are a number of buses each day that travel this route.

Getting there by aeroplane:- Machrihanish airport is located 3 miles west of Campbeltown and just under 14 miles and a half hour drive from Killean Estate. There are daily flights from Glasgow with British Airways.

Getting there by ferry:- Coming from Glasgow if you decide to take the ferry then the best option is to sail from Gourock to Dunoon and then from Portavadie to Tarbert with Caledonian MacBrayne ferries. There are ferries every hour during the day however it is best to book in advance as they can often get very busy. Once in Tarbert, Killean is 20 miles, around an hours drive along the coast road.

Another option by ferry is to sail from Ardrossan which is just south of Glasgow, to Brodick on the Isle of Arran. Once you have crossed over the island you will then sail from Lochranza to Claonaig on the east coast of the Mull of Kintyre. This is an ideal route to take should you wish to see Arran. Again booking is advisable especially in the summer as the ferries can get booked up.
