Lochindaal House

Overview

The house is within easy walking distance of the village of Port Charlotte.

The house has spectacular uninterrupted views over the loch, from the Paps of Jura, over Bowmore, the Oa and to the Scottish Mainland.

The sleeping accommodation is two double, one twin and one triple bedroom. The two double bedrooms have perfect views across the loch and over the lighthouse. The sitting room has two sofas one of which is a bed settee. The dinning room has an extendable table which can easily accommodate twelve place settings. The kitchen is fully modernised with built in dishwasher. On the front of the house and overlooking the loch is a large double glazed sun room.

The nearby village of Port Charlotte has two hotels with bars and food as well as another two tea rooms, a local shop and filling station.

The house is ideally positioned for walking, cycling, fishing or sailing. There are many beautiful unspoilt beaches within a few miles. Islay offers all that a family could look for in an Island holiday, peace and tranquillity as well as modern conveniences.
Lochindaal House was once the home of the lighthouse keeper for the Port Charlotte light on the island of Islay. There is a daily car and passenger ferry from Kennacraig on the Mull of Kintyre and a weekly service from Oban. The ferry from Kennacraig takes approximately two hours. The Island is well serviced with twice daily flights from Glasgow and there are three flights a week from Oban.

The Island is known as the Queen of the Hebrides. A beautiful Island, with green pastures, long undisturbed beaches and the rugged beauty of the West Highlands. Islay is situated off the south-west coast of Scotland beyond the island of Arran and the Mull of Kintyre and lies out into the Atlantic where the warmer waters of the North Atlantic drift ensure that it does not suffer the severe winters found on the mainland. The low lying aspect of the Island allows the weather systems to pass over quickly and maintain its enviable position as one of the sunniest places in Britain.

The house has been purchased by the Dobson family as a future home but in the meantime is let out for holidays. Recent, major renovation, inside and out, the house is now a very comfortable and welcoming home standing high above the shore in its own 2.4 acres of enclosed land with magnificent uninterrupted views over Loch Indaal from Bruichladdich, past the Paps of Jura and over to the Oa and the mainland of Scotland beyond. It is situated on the sea side of the road which runs from the village of Bruichladdich, (hotel, minimarket and coffee shop and [home to one of the eight whisky distilleries for which Islay is famous), and a ten minute walk from the charming conservation village of Port Charlotte (hotel/restaurant/Post Office store) and about 12 miles from the village of Bowmore which has many shops, the Cooperative supermarket, a swimming pool and yet another distillery (also cottage hospital and police station).

Islay is a tranquil place, fascinating for bird watchers, ideal for walking, cycling (bicycles are for hire in the village), horse riding and fishing. It has beautiful sandy beaches and a first-class golf course and is perfect for a relaxing holiday. A holiday in Islay is never dull. There are beaches to explore, walks with new sights at every turn and the many small towns to discover to say nothing of the eight distilleries which are all worth visiting.

Throughout the year there are many island festivals that are worth visiting - the whisky festival, the jazz festival and the book festival are all becoming more popular every year and tickets and accommodation hard to come by.
