Spring time at McMurdoston House

Conveniently and peacefully situated between Dumfries (15 minutes) and Thornhill (20 minutes), McMurdoston House offers a perfect get-away from the hustle and bustle of the 21st century. A wildlife enthusiast's dream and comfortable too!

WELCOME TO MCMURDOSTON HOUSE BED AND BREAKFAST NEAR AULDGIRTH

Conveniently and peacefully situated between Dumfries (15 minutes) and Thornhill (20 minutes), McMurdoston House offers a perfect get-away from the hustle and bustle of the 21st century.

Originally dating from 1540 our historic ex-farmhouse was extended in 1922 and now provides comfortable, warm and welcoming accommodation for visitors to this lovely, but largely undiscovered, area of Scotland.

Our two guest bedrooms – one king-sized double and one generously-proportioned twin – are newly decorated in contemporary style, yet also contain original Victorian fireplaces and snug lovingly-restored window shutters. You’ll find generous supplies of tea and coffee-making equipment, some local treats to go with this, a hair-dryer and lovely views from each room.

We have a large family bathroom adjacent to our double room, offering a generous bath, modern shower, plenty of towels and ample complimentary toiletries. A second private shower room with toilet is also available so that all of our guests can enjoy private facilities.

Breakfast is your choice... from full, locally-sourced Scottish, (or English if that’s your thing!), to Continental, with a selection of teas, coffee and juices. If you let us know any dietary requirements you have we’ll do our utmost to accommodate them. We’ll even make you a packed lunch if you give us a couple of days’ notice.

MORE ABOUT MCMURDOSTON

Meals are served in our atmospheric dining room or in the light-flooded hall, from which you’ll enjoy stunning views of the rolling hills and which provides an excellent opportunity for bird-watchers to indulge themselves. Guests also have exclusive use of a comfortable sitting room, where you can watch Freeview TV and play DVDs. A selection of board games and puzzles is provided and WiFi is available free of charge. A wide supply of reference books, leaflets and maps will enable you to look up any special finds or plan your next day’s trip.

We provide lockable storage for bikes, a drying room for wet clothes and footwear and ample safe parking. You’ll find gorgeous walks from the door, many offering panoramic views, practically any amenity you could wish for in Dumfries (including an ice rink, cinema and a wide variety of restaurants and pubs) and numerous enticing shops and galleries in Thornhill and Castle Douglas.

Finally, to give you a hint of what to expect at McMurdoston, we’ve seen barn and tawny owls, great-spotted woodpeckers, nuthatches, yellowhammers, red squirrels, tree-creepers, roe deer, hares and tree sparrows, all from within the 3 acres which surround the house.

A TASTE OF DUMFRIES AND GALLOWAY

Many of you’ll be well aware of the abundance of wonderful ways you can enjoy yourselves locally, but in case you’re new to the area, here’s a taste of what to expect.

The fishing enthusiast is well catered for with top-class fly-fishing available on the River Nith or on one of many local lochs – there’s excellent coarse fishing not far away too. If you’re a cyclist you really are in luck... the famous 7stanes trails are all around us (we’re mid-way between Mabie and Ae) and what’s more, the bike was invented just a pedal-ride away in Keir Mill – well worth a pilgrimage!

If you prefer to take your exercise on two feet you’ll find hundreds of acres of moorland, challenging hill-walking or wonderfully quiet lanes to explore, or if you’re a golfer you could try out some of the dozens of varied courses within a short drive. You could even take to the sea if you choose, since the varied and very beautiful coastline is only a half hour’s drive away. If nature’s your thing, you can’t fail, with stunning locations to visit, like Threave Castle and its ospreys, the beautiful RSPB reserve at Mersehead or one of the fascinating gardens in this unusually warm part of Scotland (all thanks to the Gulf Stream).

Last but not least, for those more historically-minded, Ellisland – home of Robert Burns – is under 2 miles from McMurdoston, and the stunning castle of Drumlanrig is just a half hour’s drive. Within 30 minutes’ scenic driving you could also be visiting the food town of Castle Douglas, or marvelling at some of the many famous outdoor sculptures to be found locally. Wigtown – a must for the book-enthusiast – is only an hour away.
