Come and relax at Poppys Place, a refurbished flat sleeping four on the ground floor of The Old Manse in the historic parish of Birsay....
Poppys Place has a large and comfortable sitting room, a modern fully equipped kitchen/diner, a recent;y refurbished and fully tiled bathroom, and two pretty bedrooms; one double and one twin. There is parking to the side of the building.
All linen and towels are supplied together with locally made soap/shower gel, and a hamper of Orkney produce will await your arrival. For the evenings, or the occasional damp afternoon, you will find a range of books, jigsaw puzzles, videos and DVDs.
Throughout the flat we have used the products of some of Orkneys leading craftspeople and artists. Many of these people have open studios which you are welcome to visit and there is information in the flat which will help youpinpoint some of those you might like to see during your stay.
Birsay village itself is small but has a well stocked general store close to the flat. There are two tearooms nearby (one of which does some lovely vegetarian dishes) and both are excellent for morning coffee, light lunches or afternoon tea.
Birsay is on the West Mainland and is excellently situated for walkers, bird watchers and those interested in archaeology as well as those who just wish to relax and slow down.
There are plenty of good local walks including one to the tidal island of the Brough of Birsay ( do check tide times before you set off if you do this one!). Bird watchers should check out the bird city at Marwick Head and of course the local RSPB reserve The Loons.
A short drive away are the places that comprise The Heart of Neolithic Orkney, Orkneys World Heritage Site. These include the Standing Stones of Stenness, the Ring of Brodgar, Maes Howe and of course the world famous stone age village of Skara Brae. Slightly further afield is the fascinating old harbour town of Stromness and of course no visit to Orkney would be complete without a visit to our capital Kirkwall, dominated by the spire of the awesome Cathedral of St Magnus.
