Scraefield Cottage

Overview

This former crofter's cottage has 2 upstairs bedrooms, one double and one twin with an upstairs bathroom. We have installed a log burner, which makes the place feel cosy and understand that the local peat can be used as fuel (although we have not yet tried this!)

The kitchen is well equipped with microwave, oven, washing machine and fridge freezer. There is also a table and chairs in the kitchen, with space externally to eat, if the weather is kind to you! There is a comfortable new sofa bed (iron framed) in the sitting room.

There are many beautiful walks that can be started from the cottage. Our particular favourite is a walk to Woodwick across the fields, a beach that is only accessible by this way or by sea. We are also close to the Loch of Cliff. Baltasound leisure centre is a short distance away and has excellent facilities and there are two general stores in Baltasound. You can even just sit and watch the wildlife and sheep from the cottage window, or wander down to the natural spring and small stream, at the end of the field. We have attached some photos of both the cottage and of some favourite walks.

There are few places left on this earth where you can escape back to nature, wake up to the sound of the birds and avoid human contact for days, if you so desire. Unst is one such place.

Wander along deserted beaches, watch the colonies of puffins and various seabirds nest among the cliffs off Hermaness, or simply stroll out of the back door over the hill-tops to the sea.

The secluded beaches, such as Westing and Easting are perfect spots from which to spot seals or enjoy a leisurely stroll. For the more active-minded, the island is lined with stretches of empty roads to cycle along and there are numerous possibilities for hiking, sailing or fishing.

Of course, if it's human contact that you crave, then Unst offers a range of get-togethers from traditional music evenings to fish and chip suppers and the locals are full of the warmth and kind-hearted generosity of days gone by. Pop into the museums or heritage centre to review or study the island's history.

Scraefield is the perfect base from which to explore the island, yet the secluded nature of the house transports you a million miles away from daily chores. If you're looking for a home from home, then this is the right place.

Cheaper winter rates available. Please call for more details.
