Shepherds Cottage

Attractive cottage beside the river Glass with views over the fields to Glen Affric. After walking, sightseeing, or playing with the children on the large green area in front, relax on the bench beside the river and watch the sun setting.

Glen Affric is now a National Nature Reserve so come and enjoy its tranquillity and beauty in this detatched cottage on the banks of the River Glass. A paradise for walkers of all abilities, be it up to the tops for  incredible views, the  scenic walk along Loch Affric, or through the ancient trees to the Plodda and Dog Falls both spectacular in spate. There are walks from the cottage along the river bank and over the fields. Glen Affric is popular for wildlife lovers with stags round the cottage in early Spring, and a good chance of spotting a red squirrel as they collect their hazel nuts, more difficult to see are the otters and pine martins. It is an excellent base for birdwatchers with numerous river birds - goosanders, mergansers, herons, water ousels on the river and at certain times of the year great northern divers on the lochs. Venturing further onto the hills you may see grouse, ptarmigan and golden eagles as well as the little pippits and sky larks. A visit in autumn can be well rewarded with the  stunning autumn colours of the  yellow birches alongside the dark green of the Caledonian Pines, rising above the red and green blaeberry bushes. Set this against the snow on the tops of the hills which is reflected in the still waters of loch Benevian and it can rival the Fall in Virginia, USA any day!

Children can bicycle in safety around the farm buildings or play ball games on the large open space in front. Loch Ness with the Monster museums, and the dolphins in the Moray Firth are a short drive. There is a 9 hole golf course at Aigas or for the real golf enthusiasts there are links courses at Fortrose and Tain and a hilly course at Strathpeffer to name but a few.

Local historical sights include Urquhart Castle on Loch Ness, the battlefiels of Culloden with an excellent visitor centre, Cawdor Castle and  impressive gardens, Dunrobin Castle, Castle Leod, Fort George and Muir of Ord Distillery all within easy reach. For the more adventurous a trip to Skye is possible in the day

The Shepherds Cottage is single storey and sleeps a miximum of 5. The accommodation consisits of 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedded room, 1 single bedroom, bathroom, well equipped kitchen and sitting room with open coal fire. There is car parking beside the cottage.

The cottage is open beginning of March until beginning of November
