Road Directions

Glasgow: Head west on M8, follow signs for Greenock. Take exit for Erskine Bridge (M898), cross bridge, exit left, signposted Crianlarich. Continue on A82, through Dumbarton and Tarbet. Stay on this road (becomes A83), signposted Campbeltown. Pass through Inveraray, travel south to Tarbert. Enter village, Victoria Hotel on RHS, park close to Tarbert library. Tarbert Castle View (Afton) adjacent to library on its LHS. Edinburgh: M9 to beyond Stirling to Junction 10 onto A84 (Stirling, Callander, Crianlarich). At Craigforth roundabout take 2nd exit to A84 (Crianlarich / A85/Doune / Callander / Aberfoyle /A873), follow signs for Loch Lomond and then Loch Lomond (West) to A811. Travel through Balloch follow signs for A82, head towards Tarbet (Loch Lomond) and A83. Then as per Glasgow.

Public Transport Directions

From the nearest information centre:- Tarbert Tourist Information Centre is on Harbour Street. Turn left and walk to the Bank of Scotland at the corner of this street. Then cross diagonally at this junction towards the Co-operative supermarket, onto Barmore Road (the loch is now on your RHS). Tarbert Castle View self catering is only 100m to the right along Barmore Road, passing a small group of shops and immediately before the library. The house name above the doorway is 'Afton'.

Getting there by railway:- From Glasgow: Central station or Queen Street Station - a courtesy bus runs from either station or a short 10minute walk to Buchanan Street bus station. The Citylink 926 bus (destination Cambeltown) travels through to Tarbert, with a short stop at Inveraray. There are now 6 buses a day taking you directly into Tarbert. Journey time is around 3 hours.

From Edinburgh: A short walk from Waverly rail station to St Andrews Square bus station will allow you to join the Citylink 926 bus service, as described above.


Getting there by aeroplane:- From Glasgow or Prestwick or Edinburgh - please see car, rail or bus options detailed above.

From Machrihanish: travel to Campbeltown and then north on A83 to Tarbert, Loch Fyne. Once on Barmore Road in the village, park close to Tarbert library, Tarbert Castle View is adjacent to the library on LHS. The house name above the doorway is 'Afton'.


Getting there by ferry:- From Glasgow: take the M8/A8 towards Greenock. Continue through Greenock to Gourock. From Gourock take the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry (every hour) or the Western Ferry (every fifteen minutes) to Dunoon. Western ferries berth at Hunters Quay, just 2 miles outside Dunoon. From Dunoon, follow the signs to Strachur (3 miles). Turn left at a T junction, signposted to Tignabruich. Follow signs to Tighnabruich, Kames and the Portavadie Ferry (approx 24 miles). Then continue on single track road and follow signs to the Portavadie ferry slip. Ferry passage is approx 25 minutes, but please check Caledonian MacBrayne timetable.
