This is a place to relax after your day in one of Europe's last great wilderness areas. Enjoy the superb locally sourced cuisine, take the time to read a book in our comfortable lounge or simply have a drink in the bar.
The Overscaig is an ideal base to explore all the attractions of the Northern Highlands For those interested in hill-walking, the four most northerly Munros and many spectacular hill walks, including one which takes you to the UK's highest waterfall Eas a' Chual Aluinn, are all less than an hour away. In addition, there are many easier walks along forestry tracks or along the coast that take in the wonderful scenery of Caithness and Sutherland. All allow you to experience the "spiritual" nature of isolation that this region offers those who make the journey.
The Overscaig is also an excellent location for bird-watching, with bullfinches, siskin, hen harrier, osprey and many others seen from the loch view dinning room. Golden eagles can be seen in the hills to the west and the boat trip to Handa Island lets you see spectacular colonies of guillemots, also puffin, fulmar, shag, razorbill, skuas (both arctic and great), kittiwake, gulls and terns.
Sutherland is renowned for its excellent wild brown trout fishing and the hotel offers fishing and boats on Loch Shin, Loch Ghriama and Loch Merkland where a bountiful catch awaits all who try. Salmon and Sea Trout fishing can also be arranged on local lochs.
A vast region of the North West Highlands has recently been designated a UNESCO GeoPark because of its unique geological significance. This 2000 square km area takes in some of the finest mountain and coastal landscapes in Britain and contains a wealth of classic geological locations. There are also a significant number of historical and archaeological sites, including scheduled monuments and listed buildings.
The Overscaig offers a unique experience: peace and tranquillity with a warm Highland welcome, at the heart of the spectacular region that is the Northern Highlands.
