The Thornhill Inn

Overview

This former coaching inn dates back to the 16th century but today it offers wonderful modern amenities in its 11 en suite bedrooms, with Wi-Fi, Sky TV and hospitality trays. Enjoy a good pint of Scottish beer or a glass of wine and a game of pool in the refurbished bar, which is full of character due to its sandstone walls, oak floor and original features like shutters, fireplaces and doors. After a good day's sightseeing or taking part in one of the many activities available in the area, you'll relish the high quality meals served here.

Thornhill is well placed for the areas' great walking, fishing, shooting, golfing and cycling while you can also visit local historic attractions such as Drumlanrig Castle. Explore the rich heritage of this varied landscape by climbing the ancient hill fort of Tynron Doon - one of the best preserved in Britain - or marvel at the Queensberry Marbles in the elegant church of Durisdeer.

Fisherman will delight in the loch- and river fishing in and around the River Nith, while the Lowther Hills and the long-distance route, the Southern Upland Way, offer opportunities for walking and rambling for all abilities. Cycling is another popular activity in this area as you can take a leisurely cycle along the KM Trail, named after Kirkpatrick Macmillan, the inventor of the first pedal cycle, or go biking on the trails in the Ae Forest.
