A 'bothy' is a traditional basic shelter, however Whiteside could not be more different with stunning features, stained wooden floors throughout, a cosy mezzanine level snug and a vast, open-plan living area with a distinctive beamed ceiling giving a nod to the building’s former life. To the rear of the property is a sheltered, patio garden with fabulous views across open countryside to the Cheviot Hills beyond.
The owner’s exquisite eye for detail has bought together a fascinating selection of family heirlooms, unusual objets d’art, artwork and painstakingly-sourced reclaimed materials. All this is combined with top of the range items from modern designers such as Ralph Lauren and mod-cons such as broadband and Sky TV. Activities & Attractions
If you can bring yourself to leave the house, many more delights are in store. The charming market town of Duns is nearby and includes a museum dedicated to local motor racing legend Jim Clark. Also closeby is stately Manderston, said to be the perfect example of an Edwardian country house and home to the only silver-staircase in the world.
A bit further down the road, Kelso remains one of the most attractive and unspoilt towns in the Borders, famous for the majestic Floors Castle and its Flemish-style cobbled square. The town is home to a fine selection of local shops, pubs and restaurants, and plays host to a monthly farmer's market as well as a lively events calendar. You can enjoy another good choice of eateries in the pretty town of Melrose, with its narrow streets and boutique-style shopping, and the evocative ruins of Melrose Abbey. For city attractions, Edinburgh is an easy day trip by car or 45 minutes on the train from Berwick.
Feeling energetic? The immediate area provides excellent walking, cycling and riding along dedicated routes including the Border Loop and Southern Upland Way. There is some excellent, challenging shooting available within easy reach of the house and with the famous River Tweed nearby, the bothy is an ideal base for fishing parties. The house is well-equipped for sporting parties with a drying room, wader racks and a gun cabinet. Golfers too can enjoy terrific sport on 16 courses within a 30 mile radius, ranging from challenging PGA Championship courses, to picturesque links and parkland courses.
The accommodation comprises four bedrooms; two large doubles with superking beds, one small double with a small queen size bed and one large twin with two 3' beds. All have fabulous views over open countryside. The bedrooms are decorated to the highest standard and comfort throughout. All have plenty of storage space with a wardrobe and/or chest of drawers.
Bath and shower rooms
All of the bedrooms are en-suite. The two larger doubles and twin bedroom have en-suite bathrooms with a bath with handheld shower, basin and WC. The smaller double has an en-suite shower room with large walk-in shower, basin and WC. There is a ground floor guest cloakroom.
Open plan living area
The superb open plan living area comprises the kitchen leading to a dining area and seating area. The fully-equipped kitchen is decorated in traditional Shaker style. It is fully equipped with a stainless steel electric oven and hob, dishwasher, refrigerator and plenty of storage space. There is a deep freeze in the adjoining pantry. A washing machine and dryer are available in the laundry area on the first floor. Guests receive a complimentary welcome hamper of local goodies on arrival. The kitchen leads directly to the dining area (for up to 8 guests) and cosy seating area with log burner.
The first-floor galleried snug / TV from has a large flatscreen TV with Sky television, DVD player and computer with broadband internet connection.
Drying / boot room
There is a drying room accessed directly from the front door. Wader racks and a gun cabinet are also available.
Garden and grounds
To the rear of the property is a sheltered, courtyard garden with superb views across open countryside to the hills beyond. There is ample parking to the front of the property.
Catering and housekeeping
Catering at The Whiteside Bothy is entirely flexible. The house can either be taken on a self-catered, part catered or fully catered basis. A homemade meal and wine delivery service is also available, including a picnic hamper delivery for fishing parties. Daily housekeeping is included in the rental price.
Please note that this property is not suitable for children, but babies can be accommodated and a travel cot and high chair are available on request.
