Orkney has an abundance of fresh local produce, including meat, fish, shellfish, cheese, ice cream and bakery. At Appie’s Tea Room we take full advantage of this and have arranged our menu primarily around foods that are produced locally.
In the Craft Gallery you will find pyrography which is the art of burning designs on wood. For sale are a range of wooden boxes, spoons, spatulas and spurtles as well as larger items featuring designs of Orkney wildlife and heritage. I will be happy to fulfil orders for personalised gifts and will take commissions for wedding horseshoes or other special items. There will also be a selection of hand crafted items from other individual craftsmen and women living and working in Orkney’s inspiring landscape. For 2012 we will be featuring Pam Farmer’s photography, jewellery and hand knitted items.
Come sit outside on the decking (weather permitting) or just sit in the tearoom with your binoculars and enjoy the abundant birdlife to be seen in the fields surrounding us. Curlews, oyster catchers, lapwings, wheatears, golden plover, fieldfares and wrens in abundance and if you’re lucky you may see both male and female hen harriers drifting by as they hunt for the Orkney vole.
Contact details as to where we source our foods are provided on the menu so that you’ll know where to go to for more!
We aim to provide a good healthy menu – no cream or deep-fat fryer – use as much fresh local produce as possible, provide equivalents of many items on the menu for people requiring vegetarian and gluten-free diets and above all produce simple , tasty home-cooking.
Appie’s is a friendly place and our aim is to help you get as much as possible out of your visit to Orkney. To this end we have an extensive array of leaflets to cater for all ages and interests, and will offer as much advice as possible in order to help you plan your holiday itinerary. For those quiet moments we also have a Charity Bookshelf, the proceeds of which goes to the local branches of Age Concern and The Samaritans. We are always pleased to receive donations of books you have enjoyed but no longer want, to increase the selection of titles on offer.
So, when you next visit Orkney come and find us; we feel sure you’ll enjoy your visit. Just take a window seat and admire the view or better still, weather permitting, sit out on the decking, relax and drink in the pure, fresh Orkney air.
