3 Great Glen Cycle Route

Extremely hilly at times, but very easy on the canal towpath; good views

Route Description

Coming from Loch Lochy the dirt forest road turns into a tarmac surface near the north end of the loch. After a couple of miles this meets the A82 near a swing bridge over the canal. A short cycle path avoids the road and takes you into forest again by Loch Oich. Access to Loch Lochy Youth Hostel, which is between Loch Lochy and Loch Oich, is from the A82.

In the forest after a three mile hilly section you emerge near Invergarry. The signposted route takes you east on the south bank of the River Garry then on to the A82 to cross the river. Walk across the bridge if it's busy then turn left on to the A87 into Invergarry. Invergarry has a hotel, a tea room, toilets and several B&Bs.

To continue north join a purpose-built bike path by the public phone box. This climbs steeply, then joins a forest road to descend to Loch Oich.

After this there is another specially built bike path leading to Oich Bridge. After Oich Bridge the route is on the canal towpath, this takes you right in to the centre of Fort Augustus. Here the canal descends again, through five locks to enter Loch Ness.
