This final section takes in part of the National Cycle Network, Route 1.
Route Description
The first part, past hotels at Altnahara and Crask Inn, is easy as far as finding your way is concerned, though the pedalling is more difficult. After this the route is more complicated so some care is required.
Lairg is a substantial town by the standard of these parts so there should be little problem finding a bed or a meal or whatever. Leave Lairg on the A839 following signs for Ullapool but a mile after crossing the river bear left on to the B864.
You follow the B864 for five miles, following the west bank of the River Shin. Mostly this is in trees. The Falls of Shin are worth a look, there's a tea room in the Visitor Centre. A mile or so after the falls you meet the A837. Turn left and cross the river.
After a further mile turn right on to the A836. Soon after this you might recognise Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel, probably flying the Saltire of Scotland. This will be on the other side of the river. This is a sure sign you need to leave the A836 at Invershin Station. Cross the river on the footbridge again to return to the point you started from some days ago.
