Argaty Red Kites

Overview

Visitors to the farm can now enjoy fantastic views of one of Scotlands rarest breeding birds thanks to an exciting partnership between the landowners, RSPB and SNH to provide a feeding station. Red kites are most abundant through the winter months ( October March) when they form large social groups. A purpose built hide offers great close-up views of the kites coming down to the daily feed.
As well as viewing the spectacular red kites, visitors can participate in guided walks or landrover safaris (April 1st September 15th pre-booking essential) to see the wide variety of wildlife and sites of historical and archaeological interest, which abound on the farm. Over 100 different types of birds have been recorded at Argaty. Mammals such as red squirrels and roe deer are regularly seen, making Argaty a wildlife hotspot. The wild flower meadows are rich in butterflies and moths, and orchids are a particular feature in early summer. Farming and food production are central to this 1400 acre estate. Visitors can enjoy seeing the interaction of agriculture, conservation and managed access working together to show what modern day land management can achieve. The farm is involved in the Rural Stewardship Scheme, which encourages farm practices beneficial to wildlife.
Live CCTV links to Red Kite nest in summer and to the feeding site in winter can be viewed in the Visitor Centre where visitors can learn more about the birds and the farm.

Lerrocks is very much a working farm so visitors are asked to book in advance by phoning or email.

The viewing hide is accessed via an all abilities footpath from the car park. There is a small fee to visit the project, which helps cover the costs of providing these facilities. For more information please visit our website.
