Braemar Castle is set amid the stunning scenery of the Cairngorms mountainson the edge of Aberdeenshire.

Dating back from the 17th century, Braemar Castle has a colourful past. Built by the Earl of Mar in 1628, it has been a hunting lodge, fortress, garrison and family home. The building boasts some impressive features such as castellated turrets, a star-shaped curtain wall and bottle-necked dungeon.

The castle has an L-shaped tower house with an unusual right winding spiral stone staircase leading to three floors of furnished rooms. There is also a grand dining room and gracious drawing room as well as Victorian bathrooms and delightful morning room. With 12 rooms on show there is plenty to see and discover in this compact castle.

Local volunteers guide visitors around the castle giving insights into the lives of the Farquharson family, the clan Chief, Captain Alwyne Farquharson, and the wealthy families who have used the castle as their ‘holiday cottage’.

Road Directions

If travelling from the south, carry straight on past the village, past the Invercauld Arms Hotel on the right and out of the village continuing on the A93. The Castle is situated a quarter of a mile along this road on the left hand side. The car par is before the castle, also on the left, and is situated just beyond the graveyard.
If travelling from the east on the A93, the castle is situated a quarter of a mile before the village and is well signposted. The car park is slightly beyond the castle entrance on the right hand side.

Public Transport Directions

From the nearest information centre:- From Braemar Tourist Information Centre turn right and cross the bridge. Follow the road through the village, past the Mountain Shop on the left, and at the junction turn left onto the A93. The Castle is situated a quarter of a mile along this road on the left hand side

Getting there by railway:- There are no direct rail links to Braemar. The nearest railway station is in Aberdeen. If travelling on from Aberdeen take the A93 for Braemar. The castle is situated a quarter of a mile before the village and is well signposted. The car park is slightly beyond the castle entrance on the right hand side.

Getting there by aeroplane:- The nearest airport is Aberdeen. If travelling on from Aberdeen take the A93 for Braemar. The castle is situated a quarter of a mile before the village and is well signposted. The car park is slightly beyond the castle entrance on the right hand side.
