Dumfries Museum And Camera Obscura

The Observatory, Rotchell Road, Dumfries, Dumfries & Galloway, DG2 7SW

Visit a treasure trove of local history set in an 18th century windmill and gaze through the magical Camera Obscura.

From fossil footprints left by prehistoric reptiles to the wildlife of the Solway marshes, the tools and weapons of the region's earliest inhabitants to stone carvings of Scotland's first Christians, the museum offers a fascinating journey of discovery through the region's history.

Climb the steps to the top floor of the museum for fantastic views and the chance to look through the Camera Obscura. Installed in 1836, this historic optical instrument - the oldest working instrument of its kind in the world - provides panoramic views over town and countryside and on clear days its range is many miles.

Bear in mind that the Camera Obscura is dependent on weather conditions to operate. There are also fun activities for the whole family to enjoy as well as a gift shop packed with unusual and nostalgic toys.
