Visit this small ruin perched on a hill near Oban which was once a formidable stronghold of Clan MacDougall.
This small but atmospheric ruin is located on a hill north of Oban and offers fine view of the town, harbour and the islands beyond. It is accessed by a short but steep path that begins at a lay-by located at the foot of the hill. It was originally built by Ewan MacDougall, the third chief of clan MacDougall, in the 13th century. However the castle that remains today probably dates from the 15th century. The MacDougalls, the Lords of Lorne, were direct descendants of Somerled, Lord of the Isles, at a time when the Western Isles were fought over by Scottish clans and the kingdom of Norway. In 1746, the MacDougalls abandoned Dunollie Castle and built Dunollie House found just a short distance downhill from the castle ruins.
