Overview
It was the Trust's first purchase out with the Highlands and Islands. They own 935 hectares of the mountain including the summit and path and the wonderfully wild Gleann Mor on the southern side.At 1083m (3547 ft), Schiehallion is Scotland's 57th highest mountain and one of the best known. Many visitors, including Queen Victoria, have gazed at Schiehallion's broad eastern flank across Loch Tummel from the Queen's View. It lies within Loch Rannoch and Glen Lyon National Scenic Area and contains part of the Schiehallion SSSI. It has a rich botanical life on its limestone pavements
It also holds a unique place in scientific history. In the eighteenth century, the mountain was the location of experiments which led to the calculation of the earth's mass, and involved the first mapping of contours.
