The UK’s largest raised bog to remain in a near-natural state lies between the villages of Thornhill and Kippen in the Care of Stirling.
From a distance you can make out the perfectly formed domes of peat as they rise from their surroundings. The bog is home to complex vegetation and sphagnum mosses, which small shrubs grow over. In the late summer months bog rosemary, cotton grass and heather all appear.
Within the multi-coloured carpets of sphagnum moss lie wildlife, including adders and lizards. You may also hear the distinctive calls of stonechat and snipe.
Visit in May to early June for plants and autumn to winter for birds of prey and geese.
Facilities include a 900 m path and boardwalk which allows visitors to walk around the bog. A viewing tower gives fantastic views across the reserve.
