Situated in the heart of Scotland’s highest village at 467 m above sea level, the Museum of Lead Mining is fun for the whole family.
Hidden Treasures, Museum of Lead Mining tells the story of how lead ore or 'galena' was extracted and the processes it went through to become the lead products that we know today.
Hidden Treasures, Museum of Lead Mining is unique in Scotland, having the only real mine which is open to the public. Join the Museum's friendly and knowledgeable guides to discover treasures including the genuine 18th century lead mine where you can experience the thrill of going underground. Make your way along the village paths to the two miners' cottages and see how the miners really lived. Exploring the second oldest subscription library in Europe, where the bookstock has recently gained recognition as being a ‘Collection of National Significance'.
In the visitor centre you will discover magnificent displays of minerals (including gold), mining and other local artefacts. During the months of July and August you can search for hidden gold by trying your hand at the ancient technique of gold panning.
In the gift shop, you will find a great selection of gifts (many locally crafted), books, toys, rocks and minerals and gold panning equipment. Complete your visit with a trip to the tearoom to indulge in a delicious freshly baked scone, with a pot of tea or a coffee, or stay a while longer and choose from a wide selection of tasty meals, homemade soups, sandwiches and paninis.
