Located just 6 miles from Dunoon, this parish church dates back to the medieval period and enjoys a picturesque setting on the banks of the Holy Loch.
In 1442, Sir Duncan Campbell of Lochow founded a Collegiate Church for prebendaries to pray for the souls of his first born son and of his first wife, Marjory. This church was badly damaged by the Lamonts in 1646 when they massacred all those taking refuge in the tower. The remains of the tower are still standing. In 1688, a church was rebuilt separate to the tower. In 1795 the mausoleum of the Campbell Dukes of Argyll was built. The original effigies of Duncan and Marjory are set against the south wall and flanked on each side by the vaults of the 3rd to 10th Dukes of Argyll. The present Presbyterian church was built in 1841. The interior was remodelled in 1898-99 by Peter MacGregor Chalmers thanks to the benefience of the Laird of Benmore, Henry Johnston Younger. The beautiful Stephen Adam windows receive light for most of the day. The fine organ is not only noted for its tone but because its bellows are primed by a hydraulic pump. The graveyard contains a wide range of carved headstones, the earliest dating from the seventeenth century. To the north of the church is the final resting place of Elizabeth Blackwell, the first qualified female physician in the United States.
