This small but diverse upland reserve - known locally as the Lowes Lochs - boasts a wealth of wildlife.
The two small lochs are separated by a ridge of birch woodland fringed by reed-swamp, bog and willow scrub with areas of wet and dry heath. Much of the reserve is marshy with willow thickets, though on the drier moorland the yellow flowers of petty whin, cranberry and globeflower provide a vibrant splash of colour in early summer.
This diverse range of habitats supports an equally diverse range of species including otters, adders, scotch argus and large heath butterflies as well as red kites, barn owls, herons and 10 species of dragonfly.
