Philiphaugh Estate is steeped in history and natural wonder.

In 2005 we built The Salmon Centre as an educational facility to help preserve wild salmon by recording numbers and species type from our underwater cameras and counters.
The data we collect is used by the Tweed Forum, Tweed Foundation and Scottish Natural Heritage to conserve the species.

Children love the interactive displays, which are both fun and educational. There are video games, crawling spaces where you can pretend to be a salmon fry, the head of an extinct salmon, life size bean bag fish and loads of paintings, images and text.

You can watch live salmon via underwater cameras on the large plasma screen, or video extracts from throughout the year.

We have an Audio Tour available to all visitors which will enhance your visit to the Salmon Centre and the estate as a whole. The Salmon Centre is open all year, 7 days per week from 9-5pm.

A short walk from the centre brings you to the Cauld where you can see salmon battling the waters to reach their spawning ground. It's an amazing sight!
August to November are the best times of year to see mature salmon leaping right out of the water, but fish can be viewed underwater at any time of the year from the salmon centre cameras.

Built in 1850, our fully restored working waterwheel is fascinating to watch. It was built to power the saw mill and takes water from the Ettrick River to generate power. The water powered mill was used right up until 1980, but was in need of repair, so we switched to mains electric to accomodate the restoration.

The saw mill is still in use as we harvest timber from the estate to use for all our fences, bridges, timber constructions and to sell to the public.
The waterwheel is switched on most days so you can admire the power of this natural energy source.

Our fully restored Working Walled Garden is packed full of seasonal produce and plants for sale.

Strawberries, raspberries, beans, peas, cabbages, brocolli, salad crops, gooseberries, plums, carrots, potatoes, leeks...the choice is endless!

The glass houses are bursting with delicious tomatoes, cucumbers and grapes.
The extensive apple orchards have lots of tasty varieties to try.

House and beddding plants are avialable all year - come and see our colourful and fragrant selection.

The Walled Gardens are open Mon-Fri 10 - 4pm, Sat 10-2pm.

Philiphaugh is full of natural beauty and packed full of native wildlife. We have many paths for you to wander including riverbank, woodland and heath.
The estate is a sanctuary for wildlife so you might just spot otters, red squirrel, roe deer, kingfishers, badgers, foxes, eagle owls, weasels, bats, adders, hares, woodpeckers and heron as you walk.
