Spey Bay is a popular area of shingle beach and river estuary and is part of the largest vegetated shingle complex in Scotland.
The area also has a rich assemblage of plants and invertebrates and illustrates a clear ecological succession from bare shingle to young woodland. To considerably increase the value of the site, whin and trees spreading from the conifer plantation to the west are being gradually cleared to create a mosaic of small, sheltered glades which will provide structural and habitat diversity.
The eastern car park at Birdwatchers Corner provides an observation point across the saltmarsh and offers good views of wildfowl. From a car park at Tugnet, where there is a museum and a wildlife centre, you can follow a path (part of the Speyside Way) along the river bank past the alder woods. Please avoid walking on the Kingston shingle spit during the tern nesting season (May - August).
