The Flows is a peat bog and National Nature Reserve managed by the RSPB.
Set in the remote open landscape of Caithness and Sutherland, the Flows is a breathtaking expanse of bog that blankets the land. Thousands of pools stud the spongy bog, to make a perfect home for a myriad of insects and the birds that feed on them. Listen out for the piping calls of greenshank or the mournful wails of red-throated diver. In summer, look for the small but beautiful plants such as sundew that are wonderfully adapted to such difficult living conditions.
April to August is the best time to visit, when golden plovers, hen harriers and greenshanks come to breed.
Facilities include a visitor centre at Forsinard railway station, new four mile farm and bog pool trail, twice-weekly three mile guided bog walks and roadside viewing. There is also a live hen harrier CCTV nestwatch from May to July.
