The Hirsel Arts & Crafts Centre

The Hirsel Centre for Arts and Crafts offers an array of workshops where visitors can see items being hand-made by skilled craftspeople. The centres other attractions include tearooms, a museum, childrens playarea, picnic areas and fine walks.

 

The Hirsel Centre for Arts and Crafts is home to five craft workshops, where the artists make and sell original work on the premises. Visitors can see items being handmade, buy something direct from the craftspeople or commission something to be made especially for them.
A perfect Fit & Cheviot Tweeds, new to the Hirsel, Margaret specialises in soft furnishings, curtains, dress making and clothing alterations. Margaret has a range of fine tweed clothing in stock and can tailor a jacket or re-upholster a tired chair to order. The Shop also sells a range of gifts and toys. Abbey Ceramics is run by painter and potter Peter Lochhead. Well known throughout Scotland for his range of domestic ware and wall plaques, Peter’s bowls, teapots, cups, vases and more come in many styles and designs and are oven and dishwasher proof. Peter also has a gallery of his beautiful watercolour paintings within the pottery. Often drawing inspiration from local scenes Peter’s images are being exhibited nationally. Ticketty Boo designs and handcrafts textile home accessories including cushions, aprons, bunting, doorstops and much, much more. Using quality fabrics and funky, original designs these hard wearing accessories will enhance any home. Many items can be personalised making them ideal gifts and the shop also stocks a range of haberdashery and wooden garden and home accessories. Julia Linstead decorates hand-blown 24% lead crystal bowls. Each piece is etched with a unique pattern often drawn from studies of local flora and fauna including fish, flowers, dragonflies and butterflies. Julia often works to commission with her customers for special gifts. The Glass Gallery also shows a stunning array of crystal bottles, paperweights, vases and jewellery by glassmakers from around the North East. Briget of Edinburgh is actually Laura, a talented silver worker making beautiful, original jewellery. Every ring, necklace, bangle and earring is exquisitely crafted from precious metals and stones to make the most unique work. The Hirsel Tearooms are open seven days a week from 10am to 4pm. A wide selection of snacks and light meals are freshly made to order and a range of fresh baked cakes, biscuits and hot and cold drinks are always on offer. The Tearoom also has a selection of tempting ices, confectionary and local produce for sale.  So make time during your visit to the Hirsel to relax in this warm and relaxing haven where you can spoil yourself after a good walk or admire your handcrafted purchases over some of the delicious treats on offer. The Centre for Arts and Crafts is open almost every day from 10:30 am to 4:30pm. However the craft workers all have to have some time off and try to take different days so there is always something open, but if you would like to visit one workshop in particular please contact them directly in advance to avoid disappointment.

Nestled within the Hirsel Country Estate the Homestead Centre for Arts and Crafts also houses a newly refurbished museum about estate life, an unsupervised children’s play ground and public toilets with baby changing facilities. The Homestead is accessible by wheelchair, and has parking and drop off points adjacent to the centre. It is also the start of many beautiful walks through the stunning rhododendron woods, along the river Leet and around the Hirsel Lake where there is also a hide for bird watching.
