The Lighthouse

The Lighthouse, Scotland’s Centre for Design and Architecture

Located just off Buchanan Street in the heart of Glasgow's city centre, The Lighthouse makes it's home in the former Glasgow Herald building, the first public commission Charles Rennie Mackintosh worked on. Extended and brought into the now, it plays host to a variety of attractions; events, exhibitions, Tojo Design shop and the Doocot cafe to name but a few.

The Mackintosh Interpretation centre is home to an inspiring survey of the life and work of Charles Rennie . See the visionary genius at play in 'Unbuilt Mackintosh' and take a trip up the beautiful, modern helical staircase in the Mack tower for an incredible panoramic view of Glasgow city centre. The level six viewing platform also offers wonderful vistas and is accessible by lift.

Level one at The Lighthouse is home to a cutting edge exhibition programme and has become a hub for Glasgow's vibrant design industry. Gallery One and the Review Gallery offer a constantly changing selection of inspiring work by international and local designers. The MAKLab, Scotland's first public access digital studio ensures there's alway a buzz of creativity in the building. Every Saturday access is free, open to all and once a month you can join in with the repair café.

On Level two, Architecture and Design Scotland run a rich programme of exhibitions, events and educational workshops promoting quality in architecture  and place making in the built environment.

Foundation Glasgow on level 4 takes you on a trip through time and immerses you in the city from the moment of its birth to the pace we call home in present day.

With so much to see and do, you may want to take time out to relax in The Doocot Cafe on Level 5 and enjoy a spot of design retail therapy at Tojo on the Ground Floor.
