Overview

Heart of Midlothian Football Club (or Hearts to its many fans) was founded in 1874 and took its name from a Royal Mile dance hall in Edinburgh frequented by the founders. The club initially played in the Meadows, Powburn and Powderhall areas of the city before taking up residence in the Gorgie area of Edinburgh in 1881.

Hearts were the only club from the East of Scotland to become founder members of the Scottish League in 1890. The first game to take place at Tynecastle was a friendly against Bolton Wanderers on 10th April 1886. Today Hearts are one of Scotland's top football (soccer teams) playing in the Scottish Premier League every season against eleven other teams.

The first world war (1914-18) saw the entire playing staff volunteer to join the forces and this also encouraged thousands of supporters to follow suit. Seven players were killed in action and few of the survivors managed to play football again. Their sacrifices have never been forgotten and every year a remembrance service is held at the Haymarket war memorial to the club.

Today, Tynecastle stadium has 4 stands; The Gorgie stand seating 3450 built in 1997; The Roseburn built in 1995 seating 3676; The Wheatfield built in 1994 seating 5904, and the Main Stand built in 1914 seating 4978 bringing the total capacity to 18,008. At all home games Supporters come from as far afield as Manchester, Leeds and Lincoln.

Tynecastle hosts a variety of other facilities such as the ticket office, four function suites where matchday corporate hospitality is available and a superstore selling club merchandise.
