    Route Description:

A good network of quiet, well-maintained and signposted roads make the islands of Yell, Unst and Fetlar fantastic to explore by bike.

In Yell, experience the beauty of its extensive and varied coastline, rugged moorlands and fantastic nature reserves teeming with wildlife. Take a break from cycling to stroll along some of the finest beaches in the UK, such as West Sandwick and Sand of Breckon, and learn about the island’s history at the Old Haa in Burravoe.  The attractive village of Cullievoe located to the north of the island is also worth stopping by, and you can also stay in a great camping böd in the renovated gatehouse lodge of Windhouse, situated just east of Mid Yell.

The relatively small size of Unst makes it perfect for exploring on two wheels and pause to take in the island’s wide open spaces and fascinating attractions which include Muness Castle, Unst Heritage Centre and Muckle Flugga Lighthouse. Travelling around the island by bike is also a great way to experience Unst’s rich wildlife which includes a diverse array of bird species which can be seen at Hermaness National Nature Reserve (NNR), home to one of Shetland’s largest seabird colonies, as well as otters, seals, Shetland ponies and much more.

It is possible to reach Fetlar from Gutcher in Yell or Belmont in Unst. Renowned for its rich and fertile terrain, most of the island is covered by a rare habitat called serpentine heath which supports an abundance or rare plant and insect life. While cycling through this unique landscape, take the time to visit the RSPB Reserve at the Mires of Funzie to watch rare migrant birds and seabirds, and see the Finnigert Dyke, the remnants of a Bronze Age wall.

While you might prefer to bring you own bike with you, there a plenty of opportunities to hire one once you arrive in Shetland. Bike hire is available in Lerwick from the Shetland Community Bike Project and Grantfield Garage, and from Unst Cyle Hire and P&T Coaches in Unst.
