    Welcome to SCAPA studios

In 2014 Elaine Henderson graduated with a B.A. Hons  from Glasgow School of Art as their last ceramic specialist. Following the setting up of her and her husband’s business  S.C.A.P.A.  Studios inStromness, Orkney in 2011 she has established links with several outlets across the county including The Longship and Sheila Fleet in Kirkwall, The Loft in St. Margaret’s Hope and The Fossil centre in Burray.

Different work is produced for each of these venues ranging from illustrated bone china mugs using her own paintings and designs to hand thrown earthenware, stoneware and porcelain. These clays form a range of canvases on which to explore the potential of experimental glazes, some of which are suitable for domestic ware and others purely for their expressive qualities. Ingredients used in the making of these glazes include  granite and clay found in the local cliffs, volcanic dust, seaweed, found glass and  material remaining from pebble tumblings.

The bowl in its many aspects is a favourite form, as is the vase, a taller manifestation of this form.

She recently published a book called Singing Stones recording the progress of her last year at GSA culminating in her degree show. This is now available on Amazon.

She exhibited successfully at Northlight Gallery, Stromness in November 2013 and is currently preparing for a large exhibition of framed wall pieces at the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall to take place during the St Magnus Festival.
