Overview

It is a tribute that the building has been restored into such great shape. For me being able to open a bookshop, art gallery & coffee shop in an old Watermill is unique' Michael Palin, opening The Watermill in May 2005.

Winner of the award for UK Independent Bookshop of the Year and the largest bookshop in the rural Highlands, The Watermill stocks over 5,000 titles covering all tastes and interests. Younger readers are well catered for in our dedicated children's book room. We also stock a wide range of books and maps for outdoor activities.

Of course we'd love you to buy lots of books. But you are just as welcome to drop in for an hour or two to browse or settle into a comfy sofa to browse what's new.

On the top floor, our art gallery features modern and contemporary paintings and sculptures that draw inspiration from landscapes and the elements. Our changing displays include works by famous names of post-war art such as Joan Miro, David Hockney and Barbara Hepworth. We also have a permanent collection of work by the iconic scottish ceramic artist, Lotte Glob.

In The Watermill, we want to stimulate all of your senses. You can have a cappuccino made on a traditional Italian coffee machine. Or, we can make a cafetiere of a speciality coffee. We also serve a range of fine loose leaf teas.

On a summer's day, sit on the terrace with one of our smoothies made using local berries. And don't forget the cake - we also serve tasty light snacks. We use locally sourced, organic and fair-traded products to ensure the best quality.

Sit down and relax with your drink or wander off to browse in our music department. Here you can listen to tracks from CDs of classical, jazz, world and Celtic music.
