Langbigging, Stenness, Orkney, KW16 3LB

Orkney is bigger on the inside. Visit my website to learn more about these green islands full of surprises. One thing you really shouldn't miss is a walk through Stromness, the quiet little town with the very lively history.

I was brought up on stories of Stromness, as my mother grew up in the heart of the town. I spent school lunch-times exploring the little closes.

The town is quiet and charming now but it was such a riotous place when the harbour was busy that the Town Council made themselves Special Constables and issued everyone with a serviceable baton.

Stromness is packed full of stories related to the wider world: whaling ships; the herring fleet; the World Wars; the Hudson's Bay Company; Sir John login; Captain Cook and Eliza Fraser. There is also the fun of life in a small town: local characters; sledging in the streets; playing on the piers; the Yule Log and the Ba.

Walks can be as long or short as you like and can be morning, afternoon or evening. Daytime walks can include a visit to the fascinating Stromness Museum.
