Overview

The islands are also rich culturally with Gaelic spoken widely whilst the dramatic landscape is peppered with signs of the past from Neolithic burial cairns and standing stones to the abandoned houses from the more recent land clearances.
Low intensity agriculture is practised on the machair creating flower rich meadows hardly ever seen in other areas of the UK and something becoming increasingly rare elsewhere in Europe.

We can offer anything from day excursions to week-long, all-inclusive trips visiting all the main islands making up the Outer Hebridean chain. Based in South Uist year round we have the most up to date information on where to find birds, otters and seals throughout the Outer Hebrides.

We can offer day trips that specialise in any of the above as well as flowers; or provide a general wildlife tour that covers many aspects of the natural history.

Western Isles Wildlife have been operating in the islands since 2007 and have created a great name for themselves during this time being the leading experts on wildlife in the southern isles (South Uist, Benbecula and North Uist).

We offer a range of trips including day trips from £50 per person to all-inclusive week long breaks that take in all the main islands in the chain (Barra - Butt of Lewis).
The trips cater for individual requirements and we specialise in tours to see otters, birds and flowers. We have a very good success rate with otters and have taken film crews from the BBC and Welsh TV to see them.
Our bird experience is second to none being able to read local conditions to allow us to make the most of the weather and where to best find different species at different times of year.
Trips to see Corncrakes and phalaropes in the spring are very popular although our group size never exceeds 8 and is often much smaller to create a quality experience and minimise disturbance. We have also found many unusual and rare birds whilst on tour adding to the excitement.

Our leader also has a good knowledge of the flowering plants and where to find the rarer species that occur here.
