Dunkeld And The Hermitage

Overview

The National Trust for Scotland owns 20 houses in The Cross and Cathedral Street; most date from the rebuilding of the town after the Battle of Dunkeld in 1689.

Restored by the Trust, the houses provide homes of modern standards while retaining the charm of their period exteriors. Although these private homes are not open to the public, visitors are welcome at the Trusts Ell Shop, which takes its name from the ell or weavers measure fixed to the wall outside. The Atholl Memorial Fountain at the centre of the Cross was restored to working order in 1993.

Stanley Hill: a fragment of the designed landscape for Dunkeld House, laid out in 1730 by the Duke of Atholl. The mound itself has an ice-house, reached by steps. 2.4 ha (6 a). Maintained by Perth and Kinross Council.
Banks of Tay and Braan: The south banks of the River Tay and the River Braan, from the Inver Road to the Inchewen Burn, form part of the Birnam Circular Walk.
The Hermitage: Ideal for walks, these 13 ha (33 a) of interesting mixed conifer and deciduous woodlands contain one of Britains tallest Douglas fir trees, and are especially spectacular in autumn. Above the wooded gorge of the River Braan is a picturesque folly, Ossians Hall; built in 1758 and restored in 1952.
