Towns & Villages

The harbour towns of Fortrose and Rosemarkie are situated on the southern coast of the Black Isle beside the Cromarty Firth, opposite Fort George.

Nestled in the hollow in the hills, Fortrose boasts a ruined red sandstone cathedral surrounded by mossy lawns. This impressive sight is a centerpiece for the annual medieval fair, St. Boniface’s Fair, which requires all participants to wear medieval costumes and there is entertainment including traditional music, jugglers, and craft and produce stalls. The town also has a very pretty harbour and a peaceful and secluded beach that are hidden and accessible only by narrow twisting roads.

Just a few minutes’ walk away, Rosemarkie is bordered by a pleasant sand beach and sea caves, making it a popular spot for family days out. The village is also home to Groam House Museum, dedicated to Pictish and Celtic art.
